White smoke curls from each house. the sticky rice is being steamed upon charcoal fires. Bok, bok, bok, women crush chillies in their mortars, preparing the morning meal. In the cool of dawn, women complete the household tasks, sweeping the floors and yard, feeding scrawny chickens, leaving for the fields to collect mulberry leaves for the voracious silkworms. Other villagers have already left for the fields to water dry-season crops. Muddy men scoop up fish with circular nets from the almost-dry dames in the paddy fields
