This qualitative study explored the lived experiences and perceived barriers to self-care among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in South Ethiopia using a descriptive phenomenological approach. The findings revealed key challenges including emotional distress after diagnosis, fear of complications, financial and resource constraints, cultural and religious influences, and gaps in healthcare support and patient understanding.
The study highlights that effective diabetes management requires more than medical treatment alone. Emotional support, culturally sensitive education, stronger health systems, and community collaboration are essential to improve self-care practices and quality of life among patients with type 2 diabetes.
